03 · Nice, a city of history
Historic places to visit in Nice
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 as the “Winter Resort Town of the Riviera”, Nice still bears the mark of every era: a Roman city in Cimiez, a baroque old town and Belle Époque palaces along the seafront. Here are the places not to miss.
01The Promenade des Anglais
Laid out from the 1820s at the initiative of British winter visitors, it follows the Baie des Anges for several kilometres. Along the way you pass the Negresco, opened in 1913, and the Belle Époque façades of the seafront.
02The Old Town and Cours Saleya
Ochre lanes, baroque churches and a flower market: the historic heart is best explored on foot. Do not miss Sainte-Réparate Cathedral and the Palais Lascaris, a 17th-century aristocratic residence.
03Place Masséna and the Promenade du Paillon
With its red arcaded façades and its Fontaine du Soleil, Place Masséna links the modern city to the Old Town. A few steps away, the water mirror of the Promenade du Paillon offers a pause in the heart of the city.
04Castle Hill
The former citadel was dismantled in 1706 on the orders of Louis XIV. What remains is a park, a waterfall and the finest views over the Baie des Anges, the rooftops of the old town and the port.
05Cimiez: arena, monastery and Matisse Museum
On the hill of Cimiez, the remains of the Roman city of Cemenelum stand next to the Franciscan monastery and its gardens. The Matisse Museum occupies a 17th-century Genoese villa set among olive trees.
06The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas
Inaugurated in 1912, it recalls the days when the Russian aristocracy spent the winter in Nice. Its colourful onion domes make it one of the most surprising buildings in the city.
07Port Lympia and Place Garibaldi
Dug from the middle of the 18th century, the port has kept its colourful façades and its pointus, the traditional fishing boats. Just above, the arcades of Place Garibaldi pay tribute to the hero of Italian unification, born in Nice in 1807.
08The Marc Chagall National Museum
Designed during the artist’s lifetime and opened in 1973, it houses the Biblical Message cycle. A visit that combines easily with Cimiez, a few minutes away by car.
09Mont Boron and Fort du Mont Alban
East of the city, the Mont Boron road leads to a 16th-century fort and to viewpoints over Nice on one side and the bay of Villefranche on the other. An ideal stop on a chauffeur-driven tour.
